Approval comes before comparison
In most states you choose a window and then check it. In Florida the order reverses.
A state approval route
Florida runs an approval route for building products, referenced through the Florida Building Code and maintained as a searchable register by the Florida Building Commission.
A high-velocity corner
Parts of South Florida are additionally governed by the provisions known as the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, which is why Miami has a page of its own on this site.
A documentary question
Between them, those two facts mean the product on your quote either has an approval covering its use at your address or it does not. A documentary question has a documentary answer.
Florida is several exposures, not one
Salt, sun, storm and humidity are present everywhere in the state, in different proportions.
South Florida
The most heavily regulated corner of the state for fenestration, and where the additional high-velocity provisions come into play.
Gulf Coast
Storm exposure along a long, low shoreline, with salt air working on hardware and finishes all year.
Central and interior
Heat and humidity dominate, storm exposure is real but different, and the argument is mostly about glazing rather than about structure.
North and Panhandle
Cooler winters than the peninsula and a genuine heating season, so a package specified for South Florida is not automatically right here.
One certified target, and the panhandle set aside
The tightest solar figure of the four zones, and it is a ceiling rather than a floor.
Southern
The ENERGY STAR climate zone map reads Florida as Southern apart from the northern panhandle, which it does not put in this zone.

That coefficient ties for the tightest of the four zones, and unlike the northern ones it is a maximum: keeping the sun out is the point of it here. Figures from the ENERGY STAR October 2023 criteria table, zone from its climate zone map, both read 22 August 2026, and the criteria rest on NFRC-certified ratings. The map is drawn county by county, so no Florida county is given a zone here and the panhandle is left unassigned.

Decisions made before price
- Approval reference — the documentary answer to whether this product may be used at this address
- County requirement — obtained from the building department with jurisdiction, in writing
- Glazing package — chosen for heat and glare once the structural question is settled
- Openings and protection — glazed protection and shutters are different approaches with different consequences
Settle the first two before you let anybody quote. A price for a product that cannot be used is not a low price.
What moves a Florida quote
- Product class — an approved impact-rated unit and a standard unit are different products at different prices
- Opening size and shape — large sliding units and arched openings are priced apart from bedroom windows
- Access and elevation — upper floors and tight lots change the labor
- Inspection sequence — work that has to be inspected is scheduled differently from work that does not
